A good understanding of people with a learning disability and autistic people is a key skill with a role in commissioning services. When support is commissioned well, it can make a significant difference to someone’s life.

Applicants

New or existing health and social care commissioners.
Anyone interested or involved with arranging or purchasing care and support services for people with learning disabilities and/or autism.

Learning outcomes

Opportunities to connect with other commissioning staff across the country and learn about what they're doing and how they approach their work.
Understand the importance of consultation and co-production at every stage of the commissioning cycle to achieve improved services.
Understand the market, legislative requirements, population needs and key aspects to design innovative interventions, recognise where services may not be achieving outcomes, and take appropriate action.

Plan services more efficiently and have the confidence to commission services that reflect the needs, preferences and goals of people.

Duration

9 to 12 months

Cost/funding

This qualification is part or fully funded through different options depending on whether you're a health or social care:

If you work in social care, you can receive £700 towards the cost of the qualification direct from Skills for Care.
It may be possible for local authorities and adult social care employers to claim back up to £1,300 per learner completing the qualification, payable on completion (subject to funds being confirmed). Find out more about the Workforce Development Fund.
If you are employed by the NHS it is fully funded by Skills for Care through NHSEI funding.

*Employers will be required to pay for the full cost of the qualification where a learner does not complete the qualification.

Qualification delivery

We're working with Hasca Ltd and Bespoke Consultancy and Education Ltd who are endorsed training providers delivering this qualification to co-ordinate cohorts of learners from Social Care and Health organisations.

South West pilot 2020

A pilot was completed across the South West in 2020 to deliver the qualification with a learning disability and/or autism focus.

The qualification tackles the challenge of defining and delivering wellbeing outcomes in an increasingly complex environment. It highlights not only the importance of consultation and co-production at every stage of the commissioning cycle, but also unpicks the legislative requirements to manage the market effectively and considers the role of stakeholders while placing people at the heart of the process.
