Skills for Care has a range of resources for registered managers serving different purposes.

  • Skills for Care are the membership organisation for registered managers in England. If you want to be kept informed of the latest practice, access our comprehensive ‘Registered manager handbook’, benefit from mentor support and receive discounts on our priced resources, join our registered manager membership.

Unlike the Care Certificate that’s aimed at new care workers, Skills for Care’s Manager Induction Standards (MIS) is an optional resource but it’s highly beneficial to new and aspiring managers.  

The MIS provide a very practical tool in developing aspiring and new managers.  Complemented by both the ‘Becoming a manager’ workbook and e-learning modules, those following the MIS can do so at their own pace and record their learning and associated actions.

The MIS focusses on the key learning needed for those with the responsibility of managing an adult social care service. This includes; governance, partnership working, professional development, supervision and performance management, decision making, entrepreneurial skills and innovation.

Support from the senior team or peers in local networks and an effective induction process can help new registered managers to be capable, confident and ably assisted in their new role.

Whilst there is no definitive list of what the Care Quality Commission (CQC) will accept, the current recommended qualification is the Level 5 Diploma in Leadership and Management for Adult Care. It’s strongly recommended but not mandated because the CQC makes decisions on a case-by-case basis based on the qualifications, evidence and experience that somebody applying to be a registered manager presents to them in their application and interview.

Skills for Care believes that those in the strongest position to be a new registered manager will have a number of years of health or adult social care sector experience and a care management qualification. 

The Level 5 Diploma in Leadership and Management for Adult Care is a vocational qualification appropriate for those already working in a care management associated role wishing to progress into the registered manager position. It usually takes between 12 to 18-months to complete. It’s also offered as part of the Higher Apprenticeship process too.

Skills for Care’s Workforce Development Fund (WDF) can be used to help employers reclaim a contribution to a wide range of vocational qualifications, including the Level 5 Diploma in Leadership and Management for Adult Care and the Lead to Succeed learning programme for aspiring managers.

For adult social care employers in England, the WDF is a practical way to develop new and existing talent up to and including the registered manager role. The funding can also be used to contribute to the cost of delivering Higher Apprenticeships appropriate for this audience.

Registered manager networks are available in over 150 different parts of England.  These free networks enable registered managers to come together to share experiences and work together.

Registered managers’ networks aim to reduce isolation at a local level by offering peer support. They'll also give you the chance to speak to people who can assist with the quality agenda, like regulators and commissioners. They can help services to share experience, expertise and respond to challenges and new opportunities in the sector. 

The networks are always open to new members and in those parts of the country where they are not available, our locality managers can support enthusiastic registered managers to set one up.

For new and existing regulated services, understanding what constitutes good and outstanding care can help services to continue to meet and exceed the CQC standards.

Skills for Care’s ‘Good and outstanding care guide’ draws on experiences from different regulated services across the country and intelligence from over 350 CQC inspection reports. The guide highlights some commonly occurring areas of good practice and examples of how different services address areas of CQC focus, as well as what to avoid.

Our ‘Recommendations for CQC providers guide’ is refreshed each year to highlight what the workforce development expectations of regulated services are.  This can help services to recruit the right managers, plan the right inductions and develop their people to deliver the standards of care needed.

Care Improvement Works is an online tool that can help regulated providers focus in on the relevant Skills for Care, National Institute for Health and Care Excellence

(NICE) and Social Care Institute for Excellence (SCIE) products and services that can help you respond to each area of CQC inspection.

Our ‘Workforce planning and development tool’ is a free diagnostic that can help identify current strengths and areas for improvement, signposting to the Skills for Care resources that can help.

Whether you are developing new workers or supporting existing staff, Skills for Care can help you to decide the best ways to develop your people.  

When developing new workers with no previous experience, our Care Certificate is the minimum that should be covered, complemented by our ‘Effective workplace assessment guide’. 

To ensure experienced workers continue to refresh their learning and development, our ‘On-going learning and development guide’ explains the importance and frequency of refreshing learning.

To manage staff effectively, our ‘People performance management toolkit’ covers common workplace issues and how best to address then. Our ‘Effective supervision guide’ explains how to make the most of these regular meetings with colleagues.

For longer-term development of staff, national vocational qualifications and new apprenticeships standards are cost effective ways to develop expertise.

With a 20% turnover of care managers, every service should plan to develop talent to minimise the impact of the loss of key members of their senior team.

With many successful registered managers careers beginning in more junior care and support roles, promoting from within is often a practical solution for many services. 

Skills for Care’s Developing new managers and deputies guide is aimed at helping services develop emerging talent and support them into management roles.  Within it we promote various options, including the Lead to Succeed development opportunity for aspiring managers. Our Manager Induction Standards can help people prepare for the new role.

Formal qualifications such as the Level 4 Certificate in Principles of Leadership and Management for Adult Care or the Level 5 Diploma in Leadership and Management for Adult Care strengthen understanding and practical skills further.

Funding support may be possible via the Workforce Development Fund.  Qualifications and the Lead to Succeed programme are offered by our endorsed learning providers.
